Speaking at a lunch hosted by the Governing Board of the World Jewish Congress, Mr. Aznar began by offering his condolences to the families of the four Israelis murdered by Palestinian terrorists the previous day.
To enthusiastic applause from the 200 assembled guests, he then outlined his philosophy on Israel and its centrality to the Western world.
“Defending Israel is the same as defending our liberal system,” he said, adding a key point he had made in a commentary in the Times (of London) earlier this year: "If Israel goes down, we all go down.”
He was phenomenal (I was there). He ripped Obama to shreds for his lack of leadership and said that Israel may well have to assume some of the leadership functions assumed by the United States for the last 60 years if the West is to survive.
