On February 2, 2010, the IAF (Israeli Air Force) received the largest unmanned aircraft named Eitan , built by the Israeli Aerospace Industry.
Eitan will provide the IAF with the ability to observe and gather information in large areas far away from Israel, like Iran.
As a result of its ability to fly in very high altitudes (up to 45 thousand feet) it can carry high-tech cameras and sensors. This ability will help the IAF get more precise information for longer periods of times in certain areas. The UAV can stay more than 24 hours in the sky.
The IAF decided to create a new unit that will operate those aircrafts. It will be the third unit in the IAF that will operate unmanned vehicles.
The use of UAVs in the IAF had significantly increased over the years. In 2000 the UAVs flew 4,693 hours, in comparison to 2009 (36,548 hours).
The Eitan UAV should have a substantial influence in the battlefield and in larger areas.
