"I TAKE strong exception to Brian Nolen’s statement (Letters, Aug. 13), 'Our government’s blind allegiance to the so-called 51st state of Israel has caused immeasurable financial and emotional hardship for our country, and embroiled us in the perpetual turmoil that is the modern Middle East.'
The foreign policies of all Western nations have always been based on the need to keep Arab oil flowing to the West. The major focus of US foreign policy is the coddling of Saudi Arabia, not Israel. George Bush held hands with, and Barack Obama bowed down to, the Saudi king.
Osama bin Laden never mentioned the Arab-Israeli conflict as a reason for 9/11. He was angered by US involvement and influence in the Arab world, particularly in Saudi Arabia. Bin Laden only jumped on the Palestinian issue after seeing them celebrating 9/11, and realizing that the fractious, feudal Muslims could only agree on one thing, that being the hatred of the 'little Satan.'
Have you ever considered that part of the reason Israel is hated is that it is the only reliable Middle East ally of the 'great Satan'? Perhaps that’s why the Islamic world is so hostile.
