(NEWS) Swastikas Drawn On Jewish Youth Center In Chile

"Incidents reported to Santiago police after Nazi symbols found; local Jewish community experiences a number of anti-Semitic acts of late.

Three swastikas were drawn on the walls of a building of the Zionist Jewish youth group Hashomer Hatzair in the Chilean capital of Santiago over the weekend. At the conclusion of a charity activity, about a hundred members of the group exited the building and discovered the graffiti.

The group has lodged a complaint with the Santiago police over the incident. The youth set out to repaint the wall in order to remove the offensive symbols as soon as possible, according to Dario Teitelbaum, Hashomer Hatzair organizer in Latin America."

"Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov formally invited the miners and their spouses to visit Israel on a spiritual journey this Christmas.

The Tourism Ministry announced on Monday that it had invited the 33 Chilean miners who were rescued last week after spending 69 days trapped underground to visit the Holy Land for Christmas as the ministry’s guests.

Tourism Minister Stas Meseznikov formally invited the miners and their spouses to visit Israel on a spiritual journey, to give prayers of thanks for their rescue. The visit would include visits to sites holy to Christianity."

"A Chilean Jewish mining executive has written $10,000 checks to each of the 33 miners that are being rescued from a collapsed mine in Chile after being trapped for more than two months.

Leonardo Farkas reportedly gave the checks in the miners' names to each of the families and set up a separate fund to collect donations, The Associated Press reported. The money is more than some of the miners earn in a year."

Jewish schools, synagogues and cemeteries in Santiago, Concepcion and Temuco have been vandalized and desecrated, AJC said in a news release issued Tuesday."

Although a five-day Israeli course taught in Chile on trauma emergency and mass casualty situations was initiated over six months ago, it came in very handy when it finally took place last week, as the South American country was hit by a powerful earthquake in April and is still coping with its aftermath.

The course was given by a team headed by experts from Haifa’s Rambam Medical Center, who returned a few days ago from Chile, where they found a lack of preparedness among many institutions and an urgent need for Israeli knowhow."

"South American is a popular spot for Israeli tourists, but a team of a different kind of Israelis returned last week from Santiago, where trauma specialists from the Rambam Medical Center trained Chile medics how to cope with mass casualty events such as this year’s massive quake.

The Teaching Center for Trauma Emergency and Mass Casualty Situations at Rambam shared life-saving knowledge and experience with 300 medical personnel, among them senior members of Chile’s air and ground forces and representatives of its rescue units and police force. News of the Israeli delegation spread, and 12 doctors and nurses from Paraguay also showed up."
