(NEWS) IDF Rescues Ukrainian Crew On Sinking Ship

"The Israeli Navy and Air Force rescued a crew of 11 Ukrainians whose ship began sinking in a savage winter storm Sunday morning on the Mediterranean Sea eight miles west off the Israeli port of Ashdod.

The Moldovan vessel, carrying more than 3,000 tons of metal, was headed towards Ashdod when the ship‘s captain reported water entering the ship, which was rocked by 30-foot high waves in gale force winds of more than 100 kilometers (65 miles) an hour.

Some of the crew had jumped into the sea, but no one required medical care. A Taiwanese crew, also in the area, participated in the rescue operation."





(NEWS) Kissinger: Gassing Jews Would Not Be A US Problem

"'If they put Jews into gas chambers in the Soviet Union, it is not an American concern,' then-US sec. of state tells Nixon on 1973 tape.

Henry Kissinger is heard saying the genocide of Soviet Jews would not be an American problem on newly released tapes chronicling President Nixon’s obsession with disparaging Jews and other minorities.

Kissinger’s remarks come after a meeting between the two men and former prime minister Golda Meir on March 1, 1973, in which Meir pleads for US pressure on the Soviet Union to release its Jews."





(NEWS) Ukraine Events Promote Jewish Culture

"Two events in Ukraine are spotlighting Jewish culture.

About 10,000 people in Kharkov participated in the city's Days of Jewish Culture, which ended Sunday. The weeklong event at the Beith Dan Jewish Community Center, which is sponsored by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, presented Jewish culture through the prism of music and dance performances, workshops, concerts, art exhibitions and other activities."





(NEWS) Israeli 'Breslov Hasid' Murdered In Uman

"Young Israeli man visiting Rabbi Nachman of Breslov's grave on 200th anniversary of rabbi's passing stabbed to death by local Ukrainian. Brother of victim lightly injured in incident. 'He was murdered for being a Jew,' his friends estimate.

Shmuel Tubul, a 19-year-old Breslov Hasid, was stabbed to death early Sunday morning in the town of Uman, Ukraine, and his brother was lightly injured in a brawl between several local residents.

The murder dumbfounded Breslov community members in Israel and around the world, and Ukraine's chief Rabbi expressed fear that local authorities might attempt to whitewash the grave incident."





(NEWS) Kiev Police Probing Possible Murder Of Israeli

"Israeli real estate broker and his partner initially believed to have perished due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Recent evidence suggest the couple was murdered.

The Israeli Embassy in Kiev is investigating the possibility that an Israeli living in the Ukrainian capital, and his partner, were murdered.

The man's family received word last week that the couple died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning, caused by a gas leak in their apartment. Further investigation, however, raised suspicions of foul play."

"Israelis searching for grandfather's grave in Ukraine shocked to discover that stones at entrance to Bogoslav's municipality building are actually ancient tombstones taken from Jewish cemetery.

Brothers David and Zvika Gorvitch, who travelled to Bogoslav, Ukraine, in search of their grandfather's final resting place, were shocked to find at the entrance to the city's municipality building, that the stones on the pavement were actually ancient tombstones taken from the Jewish cemetery.

The city of Bogoslav, located in the Kiev district, was once home to a thriving Jewish community. Well-known Jews of last century even lived there, such as author Shalom Aleichem, who spent many years at his grandparents' home in the city."
