(NEWS) A Possible Biblical Clue Embedded In The Stuxnet Virus That Hit Iran

"Deep inside the computer worm that some specialists suspect is aimed at slowing Iran’s race for a nuclear weapon lies what could be a fleeting reference to the Book of Esther, the Old Testament tale in which the Jews pre-empt a Persian plot to destroy them.

That use of the word 'Myrtus' — which can be read as an allusion to Esther — to name a file inside the code is one of several murky clues that have emerged as computer experts try to trace the origin and purpose of the rogue Stuxnet program, which seeks out a specific kind of command module for industrial equipment.

Not surprisingly, the Israelis are not saying whether Stuxnet has any connection to the secretive cyberwar unit it has built inside Israel’s intelligence service. Nor is the Obama administration, which while talking about cyberdefenses has also rapidly ramped up a broad covert program, inherited from the Bush administration, to undermine Iran’s nuclear program. In interviews in several countries, experts in both cyberwar and nuclear enrichment technology say the Stuxnet mystery may never be solved.

There are many competing explanations for myrtus, which could simply signify myrtle, a plant important to many cultures in the region. But some security experts see the reference as a signature allusion to Esther, a clear warning in a mounting technological and psychological battle as Israel and its allies try to breach Tehran’s most heavily guarded project. Others doubt the Israelis were involved and say the word could have been inserted as deliberate misinformation, to implicate Israel.

'The Iranians are already paranoid about the fact that some of their scientists have defected and several of their secret nuclear sites have been revealed,' one former intelligence official who still works on Iran issues said recently. 'Whatever the origin and purpose of Stuxnet, it ramps up the psychological pressure.'

So a calling card in the code could be part of a mind game, or sloppiness or whimsy from the coders.

The malicious code has appeared in many countries, notably China, India, Indonesia and Iran. But there are tantalizing hints that Iran’s nuclear program was the primary target. Officials in both the United States and Israel have made no secret of the fact that undermining the computer systems that control Iran’s huge enrichment plant at Natanz is a high priority. (The Iranians know it, too: They have never let international inspectors into the control room of the plant, the inspectors report, presumably to keep secret what kind of equipment they are using.)

The fact that Stuxnet appears designed to attack a certain type of Siemens industrial control computer, used widely to manage oil pipelines, electrical power grids and many kinds of nuclear plants, may be telling. Just last year officials in Dubai seized a large shipment of those controllers — known as the Simatic S-7 — after Western intelligence agencies warned that the shipment was bound for Iran and would likely be used in its nuclear program.

'What we were told by many sources,' said Olli Heinonen, who retired last month as the head of inspections at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, 'was that the Iranian nuclear program was acquiring this kind of equipment.'

Also, starting in the summer of 2009, the Iranians began having tremendous difficulty running their centrifuges, the tall, silvery machines that spin at supersonic speed to enrich uranium — and which can explode spectacularly if they become unstable. In New York last week, Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, shrugged off suggestions that the country was having trouble keeping its enrichment plants going.

Yet something — perhaps the worm or some other form of sabotage, bad parts or a dearth of skilled technicians — is indeed slowing Iran’s advance.

The reports on Iran show a fairly steady drop in the number of centrifuges used to enrich uranium at the main Natanz plant. After reaching a peak of 4,920 machines in May 2009, the numbers declined to 3,772 centrifuges this past August, the most recent reporting period. That is a decline of 23 percent. (At the same time, production of low-enriched uranium has remained fairly constant, indicating the Iranians have learned how to make better use of fewer working machines.)

Computer experts say the first versions of the worm appeared as early as 2009 and that the sophisticated version contained an internal time stamp from January of this year.

These events add up to a mass of suspicions, not proof. Moreover, the difficulty experts have had in figuring out the origin of Stuxnet points to both the appeal and the danger of computer attacks in a new age of cyberwar.

For intelligence agencies they are an almost irresistible weapon, free of fingerprints. Israel has poured huge resources into Unit 8200, its secretive cyberwar operation, and the United States has built its capacity inside the National Security Agency and inside the military, which just opened a Cyber Command.

But the near impossibility of figuring out where they came from makes deterrence a huge problem — and explains why many have warned against the use of cyberweapons. No country, President Obama was warned even before he took office, is more vulnerable to cyberattack than the United States.

For now, it is hard to determine if the worm has infected centrifuge controllers at Natanz. While the S-7 industrial controller is used widely in Iran, and many other countries, even Siemens says it does not know where it is being used. Alexander Machowetz, a spokesman in Germany for Siemens, said the company did no business with Iran’s nuclear program. 'It could be that there is equipment,' he said in a telephone interview. 'But we never delivered it to Natanz.'

But Siemens industrial controllers are unregulated commodities that are sold and resold all over the world — the controllers intercepted in Dubai traveled through China, according to officials familiar with the seizure.

Ralph Langner, a German computer security consultant who was the first independent expert to assert that the malware had been 'weaponized' and designed to attack the Iranian centrifuge array, argues that the Stuxnet worm could have been brought into the Iranian nuclear complex by Russian contractors.

'It would be an absolute no-brainer to leave an infected USB stick near one of these guys,' he said, 'and there would be more than a 50 percent chance of having him pick it up and infect his computer.'

There are many reasons to suspect Israel’s involvement in Stuxnet. Intelligence is the single largest section of its military and the unit devoted to signal, electronic and computer network intelligence, known as Unit 8200, is the largest group within intelligence.

Yossi Melman, who covers intelligence for the newspaper Haaretz and is at work on a book about Israeli intelligence over the past decade, said in a telephone interview that he suspected that Israel was involved.

He noted that Meir Dagan, head of Mossad, had his term extended last year partly because he was said to be involved in important projects. He added that in the past year Israeli estimates of when Iran will have a nuclear weapon had been extended to 2014.

'They seem to know something, that they have more time than originally thought,' he said.

Then there is the allusion to myrtus — which may be telling, or may be a red herring.

Several of the teams of computer security researchers who have been dissecting the software found a text string that suggests that the attackers named their project Myrtus. The guava fruit is part of the Myrtus family, and one of the code modules is identified as Guava.

It was Mr. Langner who first noted that Myrtus is an allusion to the Hebrew word for Esther. The Book of Esther tells the story of a Persian plot against the Jews, who attacked their enemies pre-emptively.

'If you read the Bible you can make a guess,' said Mr. Langner, in a telephone interview from Germany on Wednesday.

Carol Newsom, an Old Testament scholar at Emory University, confirmed the linguistic connection between the plant family and the Old Testament figure, noting that Queen Esther’s original name in Hebrew was Hadassah, which is similar to the Hebrew word for myrtle. Perhaps, she said, 'someone was making a learned cross-linguistic wordplay.'

But other Israeli experts said they doubted Israel’s involvement. Shai Blitzblau, the technical director and head of the computer warfare laboratory at Maglan, an Israeli company specializing in information security, said he was 'convinced that Israel had nothing to do with Stuxnet.'

'We did a complete simulation of it and we sliced the code to its deepest level,' he said. 'We have studied its protocols and functionality. Our two main suspects for this are high-level industrial espionage against Siemens and a kind of academic experiment.'

Mr. Blitzblau noted that the worm hit India, Indonesia and Russia before it hit Iran, though the worm has been found disproportionately in Iranian computers. He also noted that the Stuxnet worm has no code that reports back the results of the infection it creates. Presumably, a good intelligence agency would like to trace its work." (source)

(BLOG) FBI Escorts Known Hamas Operative Through Top-Secret National Counterterrorism Center As "Outreach" To Muslim Community

"A known Hamas operative and unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorism financing trial in U.S. history – Kifah Mustapha – was recently escorted into the top-secret National Counterterrorism Center and other secure government facilities, including the FBI’s training center at Quantico, during a six-week 'Citizen’s Academy' hosted by the FBI as part of its 'outreach' to the Muslim Community. The group was accompanied by reporter Ben Bradley of WLS-Chicago (ABC), who filed a report on the trip to Washington D.C. on Sunday, who observed:

Sheik Kifah Mustapha, who runs the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview, asked some of the most pointed questions during the six week FBI Citizens’ Academy and trip to Washington. He pushed agents to fully explain everything from the bureau’s use of deadly force policy to racial and ethnic profiling. 'I saw a very interesting side of what the FBI does and I wanted to know more,' Sheik Mustapha explained after returning from D.C. He hopes the FBI’s outreach runs deeper than positive public relations.

Yes, I bet he wanted to know everything about the FBI’s policies."

(NEWS) Ahmadinejad Views South Lebanon As Iran’s Border With Israel

"Iran’s ambassador Ghazanfar Roknabadi has reportedly said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to Lebanon is aimed at strengthening the Lebanese unity and consensus on the Resistance.

Roknabadi said he backs the ( controversial ) equation of 'army-Resistance-people.' and said we should also add the ‘Government ‘ to it.

Roknabadi remarks which were published Thursday by An-Nahar newspaper contradict the call on Wednesday by former minister Wiam Wahab ( a close ally of the Iranian backed Hezbollah) urging the ministers of Hezbollah and its allies to resign from the cabinet and to overthrow the government as soon as possible.

Roknabadi said Tehran stands side-by-side with Lebanon '… because Lebanon has the right to resist Israel, which is the source of all calamities in the region.'

'Our positions are clear and direct,' Roknabadi stressed. 'We paid dearly for our positions and we are willing to pay more because we are convinced that national interest is part of justice and when global justice prevails national interests are secured.'

Conflicting reports

There are conflicting reports over Ahmadinejad’s planned visit.

While the Iranian officials and their Hezbollah led allies have been talking about the visit Syrian President Bashar Assad has reportedly asked his Iranian counterpart to postpone his visit to Lebanon as 'this is not the right time.'

Kuwaiti newspaper al-Anbaa quoted diplomatic sources as saying that Ahmadinejad’s scheduled visit to Lebanon around mid-October was brought up during the recent summit with Assad in Damascus.

The sources said Assad asked Ahmadinejad why he wanted to visit Lebanon .The Iranian President has reportedly told Assad that the visit was 'significant due to the strategic importance of the southern Lebanon .'

Ahmadinejad has also reportedly told Assad, according to the sources, that he viewed the entire area of southern Lebanon as Iran’s border with Israel.

At this point, the sources said, Assad advised that Ahmadinejad’s visit should not take place at this time.

Assad, however, also hoped in the event Ahmadinejad went ahead of his visit to tone down his statements during during his visit since Lebanon’s security was very important to Syria’s security interests.

Al-Anbaa said that Ahmadinejad promised Assad at the end of their meeting to 'seriously consider' the Syrian president’s recommendations.

To throw stones

In a related development the London-based al-Quds al-Arabi reported that Ahmadinejad intends to throw stones toward Israel from southern Lebanon.

The paper said that the measure is a 'symbolic gesture' during Ahmadinejad’s upcoming visit to Lebanon where he is expected to take part in a massive celebration in the border town of Bint Jbeil.

The daily said Ahmadinejad will also inaugurate Fatima border crossing garden from where he will throw stones toward Israel in a move that reflects Iran’s hostility toward Israel.

Hezbollah

Hezbollah receives substantial amounts of financial, training, weapons, explosives, political, diplomatic, and organizational aid from Iran .

Hezbollah was established in Lebanon in 1982 by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

In its founding statement, Hezbollah declared itself committed to the 'creation of an Islamic republic in Lebanon.' Tehran then sent hundreds of clerics and Revolutionary Guards to Lebanon to preach Iranian theology and draft recruits." (source)

(BLOG) Sweet Irony - Israel Boycotter Flies Israeli Airline EL AL!

"By Richard Millett: You probably won’t have noticed, there’s been no press, but this week a small boat with nine Jews left Cyprus to try to break the “siege of Gaza”.

Why anyone would risk their lives doing this after what happened on the Mavi Marmara is beyond me, especially after Israel recently agreed to lift restrictions on goods entering the Gaza Strip.

The Irene‘s cargo included what was termed 'symbolic aid' and included toys, musical instruments, textbooks, fishing nets and prosthetic limbs.

Richard Kuper, of Jews for Justice for Palestinians, said that the Jewish Boat to Gaza is a symbolic act of protest against the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the siege of Gaza.

Here is all the information, and more, you need to know about the Jewish boat to Gaza.

(Jewish Boat to Gaza takes me back to Night Boat to Cairo by Madness.)

I digress.

The 'Jewish boat' left Cyprus at 13.32 local time on sunday.

On tuesday the boat was boarded by the Israeli navy and taken to Ashdod port.

Again, Richard Kuper: 'This boat and its fate are a symbol of the chances for peace in the region. The way it is being treated by Israeli authorities indicates that they have no real intentions of reaching peace.'

He then called on worldwide support for the boat.

By wednesday, Glyn Secker, Irene’s captain, was on his way back on EL AL flight LY315 and arrived at 13.35 at Heathrow airport.

At Heathrow the 'worldwide support' that showed up to greet Mr Secker consisted of eight people from Jews for Boycotting Israeli Goods (JBIG).

And making him fly EL AL? Someone in the Israeli authorities has a sense of humour.

Surely, they could have saved Mr Secker some face and put him on a British Airways or an Easyjet flight.

I can imagine his clenched fists on the flight home.

But then again it may have allowed Mr Secker to reconnect with his Jewishness in a more positive way.

When the kosher meal came did he choose chicken or beef?

There is no problem with Jews not expressing any form of Jewishness or with them protesting Israeli policy.

But the average Jewish anti-Israel activist only seems to employ his or her Jewishness destructively; by tearing down Israel in toto.

There are a plethora of anti-Israel organisations that all use the prefix 'Jews' or 'Jewish'.

Surely, in the fight for peace and jusice one’s religion is irrelevant. We all want peace and justice whether Jew, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, atheist etc.

Anyway, I hope that EL AL gave Mr. Secker bonus air miles so he can fly them again soon." (source)

(NEWS) Israeli Official: Latest Gaza Blockage Ship Contained No Humanitarian Aid

"An Israeli government official sends along this photo that he contends shows the only "humanitarian" goods found aboard the Irene, a ship of Jewish activists who tried to break the Gaza blockage.

The photo and others like it show four small backpacks with assorted toys for young children, such as coloring books, painting kits, and small dolls. The Israeli official points to the items as evidence the sole purpose of the mission was a desire to create a confrontation with the Israeli forces that are enforcing the blockade of Gaza.

'The photos show that his was another example of an unnecessary provocation that has nothing to do with helping the people of Gaza or supplying them with humanitarian aid,' the official said.

The Israel Defense Forces boarded the Irene Tuesday. The IDF said the interception was peaceful, but some of the activists claimed that Israeli troops employed violence, including the use of tasers. The ship set sail from Famagusta, Cyprus, and had 10 activists on board: 5 Israelis, 3 Brits, 1 German, and 1 American, all of whom were Jewish." (source)

(NEWS) Israel's Electronic Warfare Capabilities

"Israel's electronic warfare capabilities have been given a rare public airing.

The Israeli air force's Sky Crows squadrons, which on Sept. 6, 2007, deployed 10 F-15I fighter jets to attack Syria's purported nuclear reactor, built along the Euphrates River and modeled after the North Korean reactor in Yongbyon and financed with Iranian assistance, have spoken to the media, The Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday.

'Operation Orchard' was never publicly confirmed by Israel.

Israel's reportedly used electronic warfare to neutralize Syria's air defense systems.

Pinhas Buhris, who served as director general of the Defense Ministry at the time, in discussing Israel in developing state-of-the-art electronic warfare capabilities, said at the time: 'You need this kind of capability. You're not being responsible if you're not dealing with it. And, if you can build this kind of capability, the sky's the limit.'

Israel's Sky Crows Squadron commander Lt. Col. Oren observed: 'The current theater of operations for aircraft is challenged and threatened by advanced surface-to-air missile systems in enemy territory. Our objective is to activate our systems and to disrupt and neutralize the enemy's systems.'" (source)

(NEWS) 'Hitler Was A Great Man & The Gestapo Were Fabulous Police', Says David Irving

"Controversial British historian David Irving praised Adolf Hitler as 'a great man' and his Gestapo as 'fabulous policeman' on his shocking tour of former Nazi death camps in Poland.

Irving said Hitler was not 'immoral' but was let down by lesser people in the Nazi regime, according to an undercover report by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

'Hitler could be very cruel but he was not immoral. He was just surrounded by 'little' people,' the paper said Irving told those on a £1,500-a-head tour he has been hosting.

Irving, who was once jailed in Austria for denying the Holocaust, also told tourists that the German dictator should be compared to Hannibal, the leader of Carthage that fought against and who almost overpowered Rome.

The historian said: 'He was like Hannibal. He held the military forces of the rest of the world for six years. Exactly like Hannibal, but nobody has never denied the greatness of Hannibal.
'Hitler was a great man, one of the greatest Europeans for centuries.'

He added: 'The Gestapo were fabulous policemen. They sent 300,000 to Auschwitz and 800,000 to Treblinka.'

His comments will be studied closely by Polish authorities and are sure to infuriate Holocaust survivors.

Irving led 11 people from Britain, America, Germany, and Australia around Hitler’s Polish Wolf’s Lair headquarters, where he described German officer Claus von Stauffenberg, who tried to assassinate the Fuhrer as a 'traitor'.

And the behaviour of Irving’s guests on the tour has raised eyebrows locally, reports the Italian undercover team.

During one private dinner after a visit to the death camps one guest called out to cheers and laughter: 'What a terrible smell. It’s like a gas chamber.'

Critics have slammed the trip around Hitler’s headquarters and the notorious Treblinka death camp referring to it as 'Nazi Travel'." (source)

(NEWS) Millions To Pray For Peace Of Jerusalem

"Roughly 100 million people worldwide are expected to pray Sunday for the peace of Jerusalem.

Organizers say 300,000 churches in 175 nations—including underground congregations in China and the Middle East—will participate in the Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem, which is considered the world's largest Israel-focused prayer event.

Eagles' Wings founder Robert Stearns, who is hosting the prayer day with Foursquare Church leader Jack Hayford, will lead a prayer event from the Tayelet Haas Promenade in Jerusalem. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Christian Broadcasting Network President Michael Little and Rabbi Shlomo Riskin of Efrat are scheduled to participate in the gathering, which will be broadcast on God TV.

'We are living in challenging days, when Jerusalem is under tremendous pressure on all sides,' Stearns said. 'The prayers of faithful people on her behalf will make a difference, especially as Christians and Jews from the nations, along with Arab Christians and Jews from Israel, stand together in Jerusalem on Oct. 3.'

The eight-year-old effort is rooted in Psalm 122:6, which calls on believers to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. But Stearns said Jerusalem is growing increasing central in world events, which should further motivate Christians to intercede.

'The centrality of Jerusalem to global affairs has never been more obvious and more at the forefront,' he said. '... The city of Jerusalem is [having] and will have in the future massive global geopolitical ramifications. So Christians must become educated on the complex issues surrounding the city of Jerusalem.'

Stearns said Christians will intercede for all Israel's inhabitants, both Arabs and Jews, and the prayer day won't center on politics.

'We do not pray from nor towards a specific political agenda,' he added. 'But we pray from a scriptural basis, which we believe transcends momentary political understanding and ultimately works toward God's intended blessing for all people.'

This year, organizers also are calling intercessors to link their prayers with action by supporting Eagles' Wings' efforts to feed at least 1,000 needy families in Israel.

'We really felt the Lord telling us in prayer ... faith without works is dead,' Stearns said.

'So we're inviting people to feed the poor in Jerusalem and Israel- both Jew and Arab. And we've already begun to see great response toward that.'

The prayer day began in 2002 and now has support from hundreds of Christian leaders, including Christians United for Israel founder John Hagee, Bible teacher Kay Arthur, author Joel Rosenberg, Gospel for Asia President K.P. Yohanan and Aglow International President Jane Hansen Hoyt.

'Never has it been as critical as it is now that we stand in the gap for the nation of Israel and its people,' Hoyt said in a statement. 'The biblical mandate to ‘pray for the peace of Jerusalem' must take on greater priority in our lives as we watch the intensity of warfare increase, both in the natural and spiritual realms, over God's end-time purposes for His people-Israel and the body of Christ.'

In addition to the Jerusalem event, prayer gatherings will be held across the globe and on college campuses. Intercessors can also participate through a 24-hour telephone prayer room." (source)

(NEWS) Yemen Will Not Bow To "Zionist Pressure"

"Information Minister Hassan al-Lawzi has said that the war with the Houthis in the north of the country and the protests demanding separation in the south were a result of foreign interference.

In an interview with Syrian newspaper al-Watan, al-Lawzi confirmed that the Yemeni government has strong ties with the United States.

'These ties protect Yemen from Zionist pressures', said Al-Lawzi, adding the relation between Yemen and the Unites states is developed to combat a joint threat, 'which is the crimes of al-Qaeda'.

'Pressures were put on Yemen to compromise the Arab unanimously and to establish relations with Israel', al-Lawzi said.

'Yemen's relations with the United States are strong, but not on the expense of the Palestinian people and national interests. Yemen went through bitter experiences of which the most dangerous was the export of revolutions', he stressed. 'However, it overcame that', he added.

What is happening in Iraq, Sudan, and Somalia shows that there were conspiracies to stress the 'Zionist entity' and others against Arab countries, including Yemen.

On the crisis between the Yemeni government and the Houthis, the minister said that the Qatari initiative was revived and that things were positive especially after the agreement with the Houthis on 22 detailed points of the six points that were agreed on earlier.

'The situations in Saada and Harf Sufyam, where clashes occurred, are not positive and stable', he stressed.

'The calls for separation in the south were a huge media act that was not yet represented by a leader with which the authority could hold dialogue', he noted.

He emphasized that the government, all ministers, and constitutional bodies complied with the clear instructions of the leadership regarding the importance of holding a successful dialogue and stressing peace in the different areas of Yemen. He refused the statements of British Minister of State for International Development Alan Duncan in which he said that great dangers would occur if the state collapsed in Yemen.

Yemen is safe and solid, the minister highlighted. Foreign interference in the internal affairs of Yemen was not acceptable, he said.

He admitted that his country had great economic problems, saying that its main source was oil in the 1980s, which is decreasing. Major challenges facing the country were the large budget deficit, water shortage, poverty, and unemployment, he said." (source)

(BLOG) Israel ‘Destroyed’ Gaza Hospital That Never Existed

"Another anti-Israeli campaign, this time charging that the IDF destroyed a Christian hospital in Gaza earlier this year, has gone up in smoke following an investigation by the Jewish Telegraph Agency (JTA). One question remains: what was supposed to happen with the $1.67 million raised for 'rebuilding' the hospital?

Several months ago a fundraising campaign was conducted in Greece, with a star-studded telethon for the hospitals that Israel allegedly 'destroyed with their bombs' during the Operation Cast Lead counterterrorist campaign from last December through mid-January.

The JTA revealed that the supposed hospital was not on United Nations and Red Crescent Society lists of damaged structures. Officials of non-government groups (NGOs) in Gaza told the American Jewish news network that only one Christian hospital was used during the campaign and that it did not sustain any damage.

When questioned, the Greek television station that broadcast the telethon said it was only responsible for providing the air time and that the government and a trade union were behind the campaign. The union referred the JTA to the government.

The Greek ambassador in Israel in turn referred the JTA to the Greek consulate in Jerusalem.

After the investigation began, a financial newspaper in Greece published a small article that 'a project is being sought in Gaza to be financed by the money' that was raised in the February telethon." (source)

(NEWS) Want A Jewish Lawyer? Advertisement Upsets Other Attorneys

"Boca Raton, FL - When you go to court, do you want a Jewish attorney representing you?

That's what a new Boca Raton business called the Jewish American Bar Association hopes, offering to connect people with legal problems to Jewish lawyers. The business has caught the attention of some attorneys in South Florida who are offended by its advertising and worried people may think it's a concerted effort by Jewish attorneys to play on stereotypes to get clients.

The Jewish American Bar Association first caught the attention of local lawyers this month with an advertisement on a bus bench near the Broward County Courthouse that exclaimed 'Prefer a Jewish lawyer!' and offered the business' phone number.

Social worker Lisa Spitzer said she came up with the idea of the Jewish American Bar Association, incorporating the business last year. She said it acts as a legal referral service for people who are more comfortable having a Jewish attorney.

'If an all-women's medical group posted an ad 'Prefer a woman gynecologist?,' would that be offensive?' said Spitzer, who is not a lawyer.

She acknowledges the group has only three members in South Florida. She said she would allow a non-Jewish attorney to sign up for the referral service 'if his heart was in accordance with our goals and purposes.'

The Jewish American Bar Association's website had a post office box in Boca Raton listed as the address of its main office until the Sun-Sentinel began making inquiries. The website now just says to 'send all inquiries' to the post office box.

Spitzer's business took down the bus bench ad after Fort Lauderdale attorney David Shulman complained about it on his blog.

Shulman said he was taken aback when he first saw the bench ad, calling it 'shockingly stupid.'

'I felt it played on certain stereotypes of Jews,' Shulman said. 'I know a lot of lawyers both Jewish and non-Jewish and some are good and some are bad. I don't think using someone's ethnicity is fair to determine whether they are a good or a bad lawyer.'

Litigator Richard Sachs said he's worried about the message people would take away from the Jewish American Bar Association's advertisements, especially following the recent judicial elections in Broward County. Some of the candidates challenging incumbents were accused of trying to use their Jewish-sounding last names to win over voters.

'It [JABA] implies a Jewish attorney is better than a non-Jewish attorney, and that can't help the legal community at large,' said Sachs, who also is president of the B'nai B'rith Justice Unit of Broward County, a group of about 200 Jewish lawyers and attorneys. Sachs said his comments were on his own behalf.

He also questioned whether Spitzer is misleading people into thinking her business is a national organization of lawyers, rather than a referral service run by a non-attorney.

There don't appear to be any laws that block an organization from calling itself a 'bar association,' according to the Florida Bar, the statewide lawyers' organization.

Spitzer's business has registered as a lawyer referral service with the Florida Bar and the bus bench ad is now being reviewed by the Florida Bar's standing committee on advertising, said Francine Walker, the Florida Bar's spokeswoman.

If the Florida Bar finds any problems with the advertising, the three lawyers registered with the service would be held responsible, Walker said.

Spitzer said attorneys will have to pay annual dues of about $325 to be part of her organization.

'Any time a new concept appears, you have to expect to be whacked,' she said. 'I think this thing has wings and it has a lot of potential.'" (source)

(ENVIRO) Israel To Make Public Buildings More Energy Efficient – At No Cost To The Taxpayer

"The Israeli government has awarded a tender for improving energy efficiency in public buildings by over 30% – without spending a shekel of taxpayer’s money. Under the tender’s Energy Saving Sharing plan, EHS Tech will bear all of the costs of acquiring and installing new lighting systems and other equipment, and the company will receive 70% of the anticipated savings in energy costs during the first seven years.

EHS Tech, which was recently acquired by the Acro Group for NIS 15 million, will install energy-saving systems at the Finance Ministry, Supreme Court and several district courts, and at a youth village in the Negev.

According to a report in the Globes business newspaper: 'The existing lighting systems will be replaced by smart lighting that dims automatically according to the amount of natural light in the buildings and turns itself off if the last one out forgets to turn off the switch.' In addition, advanced climate control components will be installed to improve the energy efficiency of central air-conditioning systems.

Under the terms of the tender, the government will retain 100% of the equipment and energy savings after sharing these savings (70/30) during the first seven years." (source)

(ENVIRO) Tinkering With Nature: World’s Largest Lagoon Planned For The Red Sea

"In Egypt there will be more artificial fun for rich men and women while the poor can’t even trust that their tap water is safe, that their waste will be disposed of safely, or that they will be able to cook their dinner if the power cuts out. While everyone should be able to enjoy a nice dip in the sea, there is folly in tinkering with nature. Especially when we’re talking about the Red Sea, which has already suffered devastating losses to its coral reef as a result of development, tourism, oil spills, and other human activity.

Biochemist with a dream

A biochemist, Chilean Fernando Fischmann had a dream. He wanted to build a resort in Chile, but the water was too cold to attract watersport enthusiasts, so he built the world’s largest 'pool.' Called the San Alfonso del Mar’s lagoon, it covers eight hectares, is one-kilometer in length, and contains 250,000 cubic meters of water. It made the Guinness World Records.

Crystal Lagoon’s press materials claim that because these pools/lagoons, which suck out sea water and have a pulse system and low energy filtration system to keep the stagnant water from growing turbid, use 100 times less chemicals than standard pools, they are ecologically friendly.

Perhaps compelled by the success experienced in Chile, Mr. Fischmann’s dream expanded. At Cityscape Global in Dubai, which will take place from October 4 to October 7, he will unveil numerous projects planned for Egypt, including the new largest lagoon in the world planned for Sharm El Sheikh on the Red Sea coast. Crystal Lagoons intends to build a total of 100 hectares of artificial lagoons in Egypt’s desert.

The dream expands to Egypt

Very little is disclosed about how the technology works or what is pumped back into the sea, nor has the company published any kind of environmental assessment reports on its website.

'The project is the result of our association with Golden Pyramids Plaza, owned by the Sharbatly family. We have also sealed strategic alliances for a number of other tourism developments including the Amer Group’s Soma Bay, in Hurghada, a US$1.2 billion investment that will be operational in 2012,' Fischmann told the real estate channel.

'In all of these projects Crystal Lagoons provides something that until now was neither technically nor economically possible — the construction and low cost maintenance of monumental masses of water in a crystalline state that allows a beach life environment and top level aquatic sports within a city,' explained Fischmann.

According to the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), 'physical alteration and destruction of habitats, by such activities as urbanization, coastal development (for example, dredge and fill operations and coastal mining and quarrying,) are considered the major environmental threat in several countries of the [Middle East] region – Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt.'

It has been reported that areas such as Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh have been developed and exploited beyond their ecological and social carrying capacities and are already showing signs of environmental degradation. Evidence of reef degradation due to tourism and other activities is clear even in areas such as the Ras Mohammad National Park in Egypt.

Specifically mentioned are two areas upon which Mr. Fischmann has pinned his sights, both Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh. Unfortunately, Egypt has a policy that favors tourism above all else, and has been slow to instill strong environmental laws to protect these places that will eventually collapse under the weight of too much expansion." (SCI) Israeli Researchers Discover Coral Reefs Deep In The Mediterranean

"The scene of bickering between Israel and Lebanon over gas fields, and potentially harboring a giant garbage patch, the Mediterranean Sea, stunned researchers have found, has a coral reef that spans several kilometers 700 meters below the surface of the sea. Elsewhere in the Mediterranean, energy-hungry countries like Egypt are eager to exploit the sea’s oil reserves. Will scientists be able to use this new discovery as collateral against destructive fossil-fuel exploration?

Nautilus plows the deep sea

Two weeks ago Green Prophet wrote about the Nautilus’ departure from the Port of Haifa; it was the first such deep-sea expedition planned off Tel Aviv’s coast and was headed by the Haifa University’s Director of Leon Charney School of Marine Sciences, Professor Zvi Ben Avraham.

Owned by the famed explorer who discovered the Titanic in 1985, the Nautilus is equipped with state of the art equipment specifically for deep sea exploration and photography.

To their astonishment, roughly 30-40km from Tel Aviv, the researchers discovered the coral colonies.

'It was like finding Ein Gedi in the middle of the desert,' Dr. Yitzhak Makovsky, who headed the project’s control center, told the Jerusalem Post.

'We never expected to find coral reefs of such proportions there. We didn’t expect it or even dream of it,' he added.

There’s more to explore

Just over two weeks long, the survey was just one of what Dr. Makovsky believes should be several more in order to do a more thorough investigation. Also, he told the paper that as is the case with other coral reef ecosystems, this area should immediately be named a Natural Undersea Preserve.

'The Nautilus crew also discovered two shipwrecks, apparently modern fishing boats several dozens of years old, that lie on the seabed. Fish and lobsters found living in and on them were photographed hundreds of meters under the surface of the water in their natural surroundings,' according to JPost.

They also took images of the chimera monstrosa, which until 400 million years ago was a member of the shark family. A 10cm long lobster was also photographed.

More information should become available over the next few weeks as scientists sort through their findings and release images of this exciting, but vulnerable new frontier." (source)

(BIZ) Israels 'BrightSource' Prepares For NASDAQ IPO

"The American economy may be in the gutter, but it could be that big crash has set the world up for a new paradigm: investing in and building responsibly managed companies that have the earth in mind – not their CEO’s and VP’s big bonuses. Maybe it’s time to take your cash out from under the mattress: preparing for a US public offering is the Israeli-founded solar energy company BrightSource. The company is to build the largest ever solar-powered steam turbine generator in the world, in California. It hasn’t been without its struggles: environmentalists showed how the original build site for the solar panels interfered with coyote land; recently the company also made plans to relocate a native tortoise.

Now it looks like it’s full steam ahead for BrightSource. The Israeli business newspaper Globes reports that BrightSource has just raised an additional $30 million, bringing its investment total to $300 million.

According to Globes, BrightSource just raised this month $10 million from the Russian government venture capital fund, an international venture capital fund and two unnamed private strategic investors. While founded only 4 years ago, BrightSource Energy is the parent company of BrightSource Industries (Israel) Ltd. (formerly Luz II – years in the business), and was set up to promote activities in the US.

And now the public will be able to invest in the company: the Wall Street Journal reported that BrightSource had hired the services of investment banks Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. Although it’s not clear when the public offering will be made. Maybe 2011, depending if they can raise another $200 million or so before then, the CEO said.

BrightSource is developing more than 4GW of solar power projects in Southwestern states – enough to power 1.4 million homes. BrightSource now has more than 2.6 gigawatts of power under contract, including the two largest solar power agreements ever – 1,300 megawatts with Southern California Edison and 1,310 megawatts with Pacific Gas & Electric Company. The company’s Solar Energy Development Center in Israel’s Negev Desert is demonstrating BrightSource’s Luz Power Tower (LPT) 550 technology and producing the world’s highest temperature and pressure solar thermal steam.

Previous investors of BrightSource include Alstom S.A., Black River, BP Alternative, California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS), VantagePoint Venture Partners, Morgan Stanley, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Chevron VC Fund, Google and StatoilHydro." (source)

(BLOG) Israeli Air Force Fighter Pilots Dodge Migrating Storks

"Droves of migrating birds strike a remarkable sight as they swirl above head in flocks of some 5,000 birds at a time over the Judean Desert. There are about seven hundred million birds flying over Israel twice every year during migration season, 600,000 of them white storks, explains Noam Attias.

Attias, a birdwatcher for the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, is perched atop a rocky hilltop overlooking the Jordan River Valley. She is also a former air force air traffic controller.

A pilot’s nightmare

'When you see a pack of storks, even if it is small, or very, very big you see this mass of birds which are going up. Pelicans will do it in a very nice order. Storks will do it in all kinds of directions as they go up. And when they get to the top of this thermal that’s when they begin to glide. That is when they are in a really nice order and I can count them really easily and I can count them 10, 20, 30, 40 and so on,' says Attias.

On the edge of the Judean Desert, looking down on the sleepy town of Jericho, everything appears quite tranquil. But these are dangerous skies for Israeli fighter jets. The bird watcher’s delight is a pilot’s nightmare. Since the mid-1970’s, migrating buzzards, storks, pelicans and eagles have done more damage to Israeli fighter jets than all the Arab air forces combined.

This is due to Israel’s unique geographical and political predicament. It’s a tiny country with little air space, where one of the world’s biggest air forces flies right through what happens to be the main corridor for storks, pelicans and other birds of prey migrating from Europe and Asia to Africa and back every spring and fall. This 'bottleneck' has fighter jets competing with birds over this very confined area.

Bird spotters, like Attias, monitor the flocks and relay the information to the air force. A special unit collects this information from her and others, adding it to their radar images to map out the areas jets should avoid.

Flock of intelligence

Earlier in the day, Attias said she saw two F-16 fighter jets zooming by in the valley below her and immediately radioed to the air force that flocks were in the area. This was unusual since the air force has altered its training to avoid colliding with the birds.

'It is very hard for the pilot to see a bird coming. It’s a very small thing. The plane is flying really, really fast and as it comes into a bird the impact of the hit with the bird will be a lot of times bigger than it really is because of the velocity and it will crash,' Attias says. 'It is one of the things that frighten our pilots the most. More than any other big enemy, this small thing, even a very small bird can be a disaster for our pilots.'

Incredibly, it wasn’t until the early 1980’s that the Israeli air force recognized that they could do something about reducing jet-bird hits. Lt.-Col. (ret.) Danny Grossman was the safety specialist put in charge of the endeavor in 1982.

'When I took over there were 100 to 120 bird strikes a year, including some incredible accidents and crashes,' Grossman tells The Media Line. 'Until then, a bird strike was viewed as an act of nature which there was nothing to do about it except get to a synagogue and pray.'

Grossman says the air force approached the bird issue as if it were a tactical problem similar to getting around enemy surface-to-air missiles and developed a doctrine to avoid them.

Strikes fell out of the sky

'If an aircraft is going 500 knots, or 800 miles-per-hour, then you are talking about a force of several tons,' Grossman says.

'We started gathering intelligence. We gave the birdwatchers a motorized glider and they helped us map out the migration routes,' Grossman says. 'We were shocked to find out that the birds flew the same air corridors, at specific altitudes and on very specific days every year.'

A plan was devised to alter training schedules to avoid the bird flocks. It took about two years to kick in and the results were dramatic.

'The number of collisions didn’t just drop. It fell out of the sky!' Grossman says.

The air force reported a 76 percent reduction in bird strikes, which is estimated to have saved over half a billion dollars between 1984 and 2001.

Today there are about 20 hits a year, a statistic that has held steady for the past 16 years. There are still cracked wings, destroyed engines and worse. But it’s been over a dozen years since the last aircraft crashed due to a bird hit.

The air force realized that it could neither ignore nor compete with nature and each fall and spring it gives the enormous flocks plenty of room.

'Sometimes you find yourself standing for more than an hour and counting storks. They don’t stop coming. I’m jealous. I am jealous of their ability to fly, ability to glide,' Attias says." (source)

(BLOG) Ha'aretz, Margaret Atwood, Fabricate Allegation Of Child Deaths

"Celebrated poet and fiction writer Margaret Atwood, the recipient of the Dan David Prize at Tel Aviv University last May, should stick to the world of fiction. In a Sept. 17 piece in Ha'aretz entitled 'Suffering of Palestinian children is something both sides can agree on,' Atwood cites a 2009 report by Save the Children U.K. called 'Life on the Edge,' claiming that document finds that 'the rate of malnutrition of the children in Area C [of the West Bank, under full Israeli control] is higher than even that in Gaza, and many kids are not only developmentally stunted, but are dying from related illnesses.' But the 70-page document says nothing about child malnutrition or mortality, either caused by illnesses related to malnutrition, developmental stunting, or otherwise. This is pure invention on the part of Ms. Atwood, whose piece appeared in the Yom Kippur issue of the Israeli publication.

This gross falsehood serves as the test case in Ms. Atwood's challenge to what she calls the 'entrenched' view of Israelis, and falsely epitomizes what she sees as Israel's responsibility for the conflict. In her words: 'If you break it, you own it. Israel owns this problem, and Israel should fix it. Or does Israel really want an international campaign in which every doughnut shop in North America features a collection box, a sad-eyed child holding a dead sibling, and a stack of outrage-generating leaflets? Write your congressman: Tie aid to Israel to action on Area C child malnutrition and deaths? Give at church, save an Area C baby? Or how about: On the Day of Atonement, when considering wrongs to other human beings for which you bear some responsibility, start with the children of Area C?'"

(BLOG) Why Abbas Wants To Kill Palestinians Who Do Businesss With Jews

"By Khaled Abu Toameh: A Palestinian Authority court in the West Bank has just reaffirmed the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of selling lands to Jews.

The ruling is based on a Palestinian Authority law that prohibits Palestinians from engaging in such land deals.

The timing of the new-old ruling is of particular significance: it coincides with the launch of US-sponsored direct talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israel. The Palestinian leadership is apparently trying to depict itself as the trusted guardian and defender of Arab lands.

The court ruling also proves that, contrary to claims by some circles in Washington and European capitals, the Palestinian Authority is continuing to send messages that radicalize Palestinians and promote hatred and violence.

If anything, the court verdict is seen by many Palestinians as a green light to kill 'traitors' who do business with Jews.

The Palestinian law also also calls for imposing the death sentence on any Palestinian found guilty of 'collaboration' with Israel.

Over the past few decades, hundreds, if not thousands, of Palestinians have been killed on suspicion of selling lands to Jews and 'collaboration' with Israel.

Only a few of the victims, after they had been put on trial, were executed by Palestinian authorities.

Most were abducted and liquidated, often brutally, in extra-judicial killings carried out by Palestinian security officers, armed gangs and Fatah and Hamas militiamen.

When it signed the Oslo 'peace' Accords, the PLO promised not to pursue suspected 'collaborators' and 'land dealers.' Of course, the Palestinian leadership did not keep its promise.

Shortly after Palestinian security forces were deployed in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, many suspected informants and people accused of selling lands to Jews were killed or thrown into jail.

Those who had large clans and a lot of money were lucky. They used their family connections and wealth to influence Palestinian security and civilian officials to let them go.

A famous Arab land dealer from Jerusalem revealed last week that he had paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to senior Palestinian officials to avoid being arrested or murdered. He further disclosed that senior officials in the Palestinian Authority had also been involved in land sales to Jews.

The Palestinian Authority leaders in Ramallah need to watch their words and actions very carefully lest they fall victim to their own incitement.

Mahmoud Abbas has already been accused by many Palestinians and Arabs of 'selling out' to the Jews because of his willingness to recognize Israel's right to exist on any part of Palestinians.

Moreover, Abbas has been accused of 'collaboration' with Israel and the US because of his readiness to talk about peace, and about ties with the IDF and CIA.

This means that Abbas, or anyone who follows in his footsteps, could one day be convicted in a Palestinian court under the same laws they created." (source)
