(NEWS) NY UNRWA: Time for Arab Nations To Absorb 'Refugees'

"The outgoing director of the New York office of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency has angered Jordan after stating it is time for Arab nations to absorb their brethren who are 'refugees' from the 1948 war.

Andrew Whitley stated that Palestinian refugees must not live in the illusion of achieving the 'right to return' and that the Arab countries must search for a place for them in their lands to resettle there.

When UNRWA began its operations providing aid and services to the Arabs living in Israel in 1949, there were approximately 700,000 who qualified as 'refugees.' Today, according to the latest statistics, that number has ballooned to nearly five million."

"Israel reacts to UN envoy's comparison of settler vandalism to terror: Does Serry pretend Israeli suicide bombers attack Palestinian buses?

Israeli officials slammed UN special envoy Robert Serry's comments Tuesday equating alleged settler vandalism against olive trees to terrorism, saying such an equation was 'absurd' and 'reprehensible.'

Serry, attending an olive harvest event with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in the West Bank village of Turmus Aiya, near the Shiloh settlement, said the olive tree was a significant Palestinian symbol."

A senior UNRWA official broached two largely taboo topics at a conference here on Friday, saying governments across Europe and the world have had contacts with Hamas and that Palestinian refugees should acknowledge that they will almost certainly not be returning to Israel.

Andrew Whitley, due to soon leave his post as director of the United Nations Refugee and Works Agency’s New York office, told the National Council for US-Arab Relations’ annual conference that contacts with Hamas were commonplace."

"Opposition leader meets UN secretary-general in New York; pleads for diplomatic sanctions against Iranian regime; objects to UN flotilla probe.

Opposition leader Tzipi Livni met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York on Wednesday, telling him that the United Nations must stop giving Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a platform to speak.

Livni said that Ahmadinejad's speech to the UN General Assembly earlier this month proved that economic sanctions against Iran are not sufficient and further diplomatic sanctions preventing the regime from continuing to get a platform to express their extreme ideas are necessary."

(BLOG) Different International Law Standards For Israel And Everyone Else

"The majority of civilian-killing cases that have arisen until now have been connected to combat in some way: soldiers accused of using excessive force or firing indiscriminately when responding to an attack, or who killed prisoners shortly after a bombing or a firefight, when emotions were still raging.

The Haditha killings, for example, followed a bombing that killed one Marine and severely injured two others. Several defendants later claimed that they were shot at after the blast. (Though most of the case collapsed, one defendant still faces a trial on manslaughter charges.)

Similarly, in 2008, the military decided not to bring charges against two Marines who commanded a unit accused of indiscriminately firing on vehicles and pedestrians along a 10-mile stretch of road in Afghanistan. The shootings began after a suicide bomber attacked the unit’s convoy."

(BLOG) UN’s Human Rights Body Composed Of World’s Worst Human Right Violators

"Saudi Arabia is one of the world’s worst human rights violators. It is not an electoral democracy and political opposition is forbidden. Freedom of speech is heavily restricted. The government maintains control of the media and responds harshly to criticism or deviation from its strict Islamic dogma.

Moreover, freedom of religion is nonexistent: All Saudis are required by law to be Muslim, while public practice of other religions is prohibited. Religious practices of Shiite and Sufi Muslims are also restricted. Arbitrary arrests and torture are not uncommon.

Discrimination against women is appalling: They may not drive cars, travel within or outside of the country without a male relative, or use public facilities freely in the presence of men. Employment rates of women are extremely low and their ability to take part in political life is minimal. The testimony of one man is equal to that of two women at the country's Sharia courts."

(BLOG) UNHRC Tramples On International Law To Demonize Israel

"Even a quick glance at the UNHRC's report on the flotilla shows extraordinary duplicity in describing international law.

We had already posted at length a number of scholarly articles about the legality of Israel's naval blockade of Gaza. The UN Human Rights Council finds that it must completely make up new laws in order to accuse Israel of breaking them.

First, it accurately quotes San Remo to define what a legal blockade is:"
