(NEWS) 3,000,001st Tourist Arrives In Israel From Sao Paulo

Tourism Minister Stas Miseznikov greeted this year’s 3,000,001st tourist in a festive ceremony at the foot of the plane at Ben Gurion International Airport, on Monday.

The lucky visitor, Pastor Ribamar Araujo Ladislau, who arrived on an El Al flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil, leading a group of 120 evangelical pilgrims, received an honorary plaque, a Chanukiah and a gift certificate for a week-long all expenses paid trip to Israel on his next visit."







(NEWS) One Million Latin Americans Demand Shalit's Release

"Within three weeks a Brazilian based pro Israel organization, AMISRAEL, was able to collect one million signatures from Latin American citizens of all persuasions demanding the release of captive Israel soldiers Gilad Schalit, who has been held by Hamas in Gaza for over four years.

The petitioners have called on former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva,who has connections to Iran, to become directly involved in efforts to free the young man.

Half a million signatures were collected from Mexico; followed by support from Columbia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Brazil, Guatemala, Argentina, Peru, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rice, Paraguay, Panama and Porto Rico.

The organizations plans to continue to collect signatures. It is also possible that the organization would ask Vice Premier Silvan Shalom to present the signatures to da Silva." (source)



(NEWS) Holocaust Studies Made Mandatory In Southern Brazil City

"Porto Alegre passes first of its kind law ordering all 96 public schools to include Holocaust studies in curriculum, in effort to educate, prevent neo-Nazi incidents.

A city in southern Brazil that has suffered a series of neo-Nazi incidents is requiring all public schools to teach about the Holocaust.

The new law, the first of its kind in Brazil, will go into effect next year in all of Porto Alegre's 96 public schools, where some 60,000 students study, the city government's website said Tuesday."





(NEWS) Half A Million Call On Lula To Help Free Gilad Shalit

"AMISRAEL organization demands that Brazil's president get directly involved in the efforts to release the captive soldier.

Over half a million signatures from Latin America have been garnered over the past two weeks, demanding the direct involvement of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the efforts to release captive IDF soldier Gilad Schalit.

The AMISRAEL organization informed Schalit’s father, Noam, of the initiative at a press conference in Jerusalem last Thursday."

"Brazilian Jews will hold a klezmer festival to celebrate the inauguration of a Jewish music institute.

The first Kleztival will be held Sept. 23-27 in Sao Paulo. The event will mark the inauguration of the Instituto da Música Judaica Brasil, or Brazilian Jewish Music Institute."





(NEWS) Yom Kippur Machzor Created For Brazilian Jews

"A Yom Kippur machzor translated for the first time into Portuguese will be distributed to Jews in Brazil's Amazon.

The prayer book includes the traditional Hebrew text of the Yom Kippur prayer services, together with a transliteration and translation into Portuguese. It incorporates the customs and prayers of the Moroccan Sephardim, which were brought to Brazil in the 19th century by Moroccan Jewish immigrants."





(EDU) Brazilian Jewish Schools Receive High Marks

"Two Jewish schools were ranked among the best high schools in Brazil.

The Brazilian Israelite School received the highest average grade among all high schools in Porto Alegre, according to the newly released 2009 results of the High School National Exam, known by the acronym ENEM. Porto Alegre is the capital of Brazil's southernmost state Rio Grande do Sul, which is home to Brazil's third largest Jewish community with some 12,000 Jews."



(NEWS) Sao Paulo To Build Temple Of Solomon Replica

"Mega-church in Bras neighbourhood will be made of stones cut exactly like those of original temple.

Brazil will build a replica of Jerusalem's destroyed Temple of Solomon in eastern Sao Paulo, in a four-year, 113-million dollar construction project, local media said Wednesday.

The mega-church, made by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, will measure 126-by-104 meters (yards) and stand 55 meters high. It will have a 12-floor indoor capacity for 10,000 people, said Agencia Folha news agency."

Why don't they spend all that money in rebuilding the 'actual' Temple in Israel and not there...
