(NEWS) UNIFIL Places Plan To Evacuate Its Wounded To Israel During A War

"The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon has devised a plan to evacuate its wounded to Israel in case of the eruption of a war, reported Al-Akhbar on Monday.
The plan, which was set ten days ago, will be implemented in a joint maneuver with the Israeli army.

The paper said that the army contacted UNIFIL command after it received news of the maneuver to confirm it, after which the army command said that the step would be a negative development that demonstrates UNIFIL's ties with Israel." (source)

"Two escaped prisoners who had arrived in the Norwegian custody in southern Lebanon would not be left to their own fate, decided then Colonel Hagrup Haukland, chief of NORBATT, the Norwegian battalion in South Lebanon. That fate probably meant that they would again be taken prisoner, tortured and possibly killed in the Mossad-controlled Khiam prison in southern Lebanon.

Therefore, the two Lebanese fled in September 1992 dressed up in Norwegian uniform jackets and UN helmets, placed in a Norwegian armored vehicles and raced past Israeli soldiers and Lebanese militiamen who hunted them out of the Israeli occupied territory. It all happened in the deepest secrecy. Norwegian authorities did not know what had happened, and the management of the UN force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, was not informed before the operation had come so far that it had to be carried out."

UNIFIL released its findings Wednesday of its investigation into the shooting incident earlier this month between the IDF and Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) along the northern border which ended in the death of IDF reserve battalion commander Lt.-Col. Dov Harari.

(NEWS) UNIFIL Confirms IDF Claims

"Official: Army informed us of maintenance beforehand; Lebanese knew.

A UNIFIL official in soutnern Lebanon confirmed Wednesday that the IDF informed the organization of its intention to conduct routine maintenance work Tuesday in the area between Israel's border fence and the international border where Lebanese Army forces opened fire on IDF soldiers, killing Lt.-Col. (res) Dov Harari, Army Radio reported.

'I can confirm that we received notification from the IDF about the work and we passed the information on to the Lebanese Army,' said the Hungarian diplomat who is part of the UNIFIL force in southern Lebanon."

(NEWS) UNIFIL Says IDF Activity Did Not Warrant Lebanese Fire

"Israelis army officials say peacekeeping forces touring site of Tuesday's deadly skirmish determined that Lebanese soldiers had no reason to open fire on IDF troops performing routine border activity.

UNIFIL forces that toured the site of Tuesday's deadly exchanges of fire on northern border said the IDF's activity did not warrant the attack launched by Lebanese Army soldiers, Israeli army officials who spoke to UNIFIL representatives said.

According to the IDF, soldiers were performing routine operations in a border-area enclave within Israeli territory when they were ambushed by Lebanese troops."

(NEWS) At Least Four Lebanese Killed In Border Clashes

"Exchange of fire between IDF and LAF troops prompts Israel and Lebanon to cite violations of UN resolution 1701; IDF says it gave UNIFIL notice of plans to cross fence for maintenance work.

At least three Lebanese soldiers were killed in clashes with Israeli troops along the border on Tuesday afternoon, according to a Lebanese security official. One journalist from the Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar was also reported killed the cross-border fire according to Israel Radio, bringing the number of Lebanese dead to four.

Speaking on condition of anonymity under military guidelines, the Lebanese official said IDF shelling struck near a military vehicle in the border town of Adaisseh, setting it on fire and killing three soldiers inside the vehicle."

"Army chief announces plans to send brigade south to help peacekeepers.

The Lebanese army announced that it will send a brigade south to help UNIFIL peacekeepers in southern Lebanon on Friday after a series of clashes between villagers and peacekeepers occurred in the past two weeks, AFP reported.

'We commit ourselves 100 percent to protecting the UN Interim Force in Lebanon against any attack', Lebanese army chief General Jean Kahwaji was cited by AFP as saying in an interview with the An-Nahar newspaper. Kahwaji continued, 'There will be no repetition of recent incidents in the south.'"

(NEWS) UN Contradicts Itself In Blaming Israel

"The IMRA news analysis agency reports that while Hizbullah brags about crippling the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UN chief Ban Ki-moon blames Israel for 'stirring up trouble.'

IMRA’s Dr. Aaron Lerner quotes two reports of the past two days showing how the UN refrains from seeing the large picture in southern Lebanon.

The UNIFIL peace-keeping force has been charged, since the end of the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006, with keeping the Hizbullah terrorist organization out of southern Lebanon. However, Hizbullah terrorists and sympathizers there have recently taken to harassing and even attacking UNIFIL forces, leading to at least one injured soldier and the loss of weapons."

"Recent clashes between southern Lebanese villagers and UNIFIL peacekeepers have decreased the UN's ability to enforce Security Council Resolution 1701.

The head of the Hezbollah faction in the Lebanese parliament, Mohammed Raad, said yesterday that recent clashes between the inhabitants of southern Lebanese villages and U.N. peacekeeping forces in Lebanon have led to a loss of the powers vested in the force by U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701.

Raad said UNIFIL's movements south of the Litani River were restricted and had to be coordinated with the Lebanese army.

Inhabitants of a number of Shi'ite villages in the south harassed UNIFIL forces patrolling the region last week some 20 times, during which one UNIFIL soldier and one local resident were injured."

A number of recent clashes between United Nations soldiers in southern Lebanon and local villagers could lead to an escalation along the Israeli-Lebanese border as Hizbullah works to prevent peacekeepers from implementing Security Council Resolution 1701.

On Saturday, two UNIFIL vehicles, including an armored personnel carrier, were blocked by a large group of civilians as the convoy traveled on a road north of the southern Lebanese village of Kabrikha. Stones were also thrown at UNIFIL forces in another village on Saturday."
