"IDF Statement on Rt. 60 Terror Attack, in which Four Israeli Civilians were Killed.

Four Israelis were murdered in a terrorist drive-by-shooting attack on route 60 near Qiryat Arba, east of Hebron, tonight, August 31st, 2010. Two men and two women, one of whom was pregnant, from the nearby community of Bet Hagay, were the victims of this deadly attack.

The Commander of the Judea and Samaria Regional Brigade, Brig. Gen. Nitzan Alon said: 'We have suffered a difficult terror attack in the Judea region during which civilians from the area were killed. Firstly, I would like to express my sorrow to the families of those murdered. The terror attack, it seems, was carried out by a passing vehicle, and as far as we can tell, the Hamas terror organization is behind the attack. The investigation is still underway. We were on high alert in light of the upcoming holiday period but regretfully, we were unable to prevent the attack. We will continue to be on high alert in the area. The forces are currently searching the area for the terrorists responsible.'

Only two months ago, on June 6th, 2010, an Israeli police officer was murdered by Palestinian gunmen in a similar attack near Al Fawwar, south of Hebron, on the same route 60.

On February 2nd, 2010, an IDF Non-Commisioned Officer (NCO), Sergeant 1st class Ihab Hattib was killed by a Palestinian terrorist while stopped in his vehicle at a traffic light in the Tapuah junction, south of Nablus." (source)

"Ynet Initial Report: At least four Israelis murdered in West Bank shooting attack Tuesday evening ahead of resumption of peace talks in Washington; security forces, rescue services rush to scene of attack in Gush Etzion area.

Lethal terror attack on eve of peace talks: Four Israelis were murdered in a shooting attack in the Hebron region Tuesday night.

At least some of the victims are apparently members of the same family. Ambulance service officials said the victims include two men aged about 25 add 40, as well as two women of roughly the same ages, one of them pregnant.

According to initial reports, an Israeli vehicle traveling in the area came under fire directed at it from a passing vehicle at the Beni Naim junction on Highway 60, between Hebron and Kiryat Arba.

More than one terrorist apparently took part in the attack, which security officials said was a well-planned ambush. Channel Two said the attackers apparently confirmed the death of the Israeli victims before fleeing the scene.

The victims' death was pronounced by medical personnel at the scene. One of the victims was a preganat woman, officials confirmed.

IDF security forces are scouring the area for suspects. Notably, the army had been on high alert ahead of the resumption of peace talks in Washington.

PA blames Hamas

Palestinian security forces were also informed of the attack, which took place just as the Ramadan fast was ending, and are looking into the incident. A Palestinian security official said that a Hamas cell is believed to be behind the lethal attacks. He noted that the last attack in the Hebron region, which left an Israeli police officer killed, was also the work of Hamas.

Following the attack, security forces across the nation were ordered to go on the highest alert ahead of the possibility of further attacks." (source)

(NEWS) Universities That Oppose Values Of Iranian Regime 'Should Be Destroyed'

"Iran's science minister has said universities that are against the values of the regime and its Basij militia should be razed to the ground, RFE/RL's Radio Farda reports.

Kamran Daneshjou was quoted by Iranian media as saying on August 29 that universities should follow the path of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

'If the supreme leader says something that is absolutely in disagreement with our views, we should obey him, no questions asked,' he said.

Khamenei recently described Iran's universities as 'the targets of enemies' conspiracies.'

Former student leader Ali Afshari told RFE/RL it is astonishing and deplorable that a person who holds the position of science minister and considers himself an academic should utter such words.

No university has ever followed the views of the establishment in Iran, Afshari said. This is 'against the essence of a university.'

'A conspiracy by Iran's enemies against universities in Iran is just a myth which the establishment uses to justify its suppressive, restrictive measures against universities,' Afshari said.

Daneshjou also said that documents which prove that the intelligence agencies of the enemies are plotting to lead university students astray will be made public in the near future.

An Iran-based Radio Farda website viewer commented, 'As an Iranian, I was ashamed when I heard the Science Minister's words; what ignorant leaders rule my country!'

Daneshjou, who as the head of the Interior Ministry's election headquarters played a significant role in the disputed presidential vote last year, has dismissed some 20 university chancellors in the past three months.

Since President Mahmud Ahmadinejad took office, a large number of university professors in Iran have been dismissed or forced to resign." (source)

(NEWS) Iran: 'Israel Has No Fate, But Annihilation'

"Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says Israel has no fate other than annihilation, urging a massive turnout in World Quds Day rallies.

'Incontrovertibly, the fake and inhuman Zionist regime has no other destiny than annihilation and destruction,' the IRGC said in a statement on Tuesday, according to Fars News Agency.

In its statement, the IRGC called for a massive turnout across Iran in World Quds Day (Friday, Sep. 3) rallies in solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people and all oppressed nations around the world.

The statement read the massive participation of Muslim nations in the rallies will bring the 'usurper Zionist regime' closer to its impending doom, which is 'ignominious annihilation.'

The Iranian Army also released a statement on Tuesday, describing World Quds Day as a
signed of the Muslim community's hatred of Israel, reported IRNA.

"On the threshold of World Quds Day, the Islamic Republic of Iran's Army, while renewing allegiance to the cause of Palestine and reiterating its solidarity with the Islamic Resistance (Movement), calls on vigilant and faithful Iranian nation" to show their hatred of Israel and global hegemony in the ralllies.

Also, ministries, organizations and institutions have, in separate statements, called for Muslims in Iran and around the world to turn out in droves in World Quds Day rallies." (source)

(NEWS) Iran Calls On Muslim Nations To Isolate Israel

"Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast on Tuesday called on the Muslim nations in the world to isolate Israel.

He said people around the world will participate in the International Quds Day rallies, slated for Sept. 3, for announcing their support for the Palestinian people and their hatred towards Israeli atrocities.

Quds Day is an annual event on the last Friday of Ramadan, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and opposing Zionism as well as Israel's control of Jerusalem.

On Monday, Iran's Vice-President Mohammad-Reza Mir-Tajeddini said that Iran will publish a list of Israeli-linked companies by next week to impose sanctions against them.

Mir-Tajeddini said that Israel has an influential economic cartel across the world and it is constantly establishing new companies under new brands and Iran will expose them, the local satellite Press TV reported." (source)

(BLOG) Another Reason To Reject The Two-State Solution

"By Ted Belman: In any imagined deal, except for Israel possibly accepting a token amount of "refugees", everyone assumes they will resettle in the new Palestine. This may seem doable but in reality it would prevent a peaceful two-state solution from emerging.

Israel now has about 6.0 million Jews including those living east of the greenline and 1.5 million Arabs. Gaza and the West Bank have about have about 1.4 and 1.6 million Arabs respectively. In total there are 4.2 million Arabs in the combined territory. The total number of Arab refugees including their descendants exceed 4.2 million located as follows; 400,000 Lebanon, 400,000 in Syria, 2 million in Jordan some of whom have been given citizenship and the rest in Gaza and elsewhere. Now if 2 million "refugees" return to the New Palestine, there will be over 6.5 million Arabs compared to 5.6 million Jews in the combined territories. This influx of Arabs will cause civil unrest in the New Palestine due to income and educational disparity and will severely test availability of resources particularly, water. These new residents will then attempt to infiltrate into Israel just as Africans are attempting to do so and just as Mexicans are infiltrating the USA.

Israel would have to double its manpower defending the fence with orders to shoot any infiltrators. There is no way that Israel would put itself into such a position.

To my mind, there would be great pressure on Israel, naturally or by Arab design. The Palestinians would then start demanding a one-state solution and will make Israel's life hell once again." (source)

(BLOG) Pro-Palestinian Bristol Student, Hari O’Brien, Returns From Palestine "A Hero"

Recently a Sea Mills, Bristol student, Hari O’Brien, returned from "Palestine" after a 2 month tour of the West Bank with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) as a part of her gap-year travels from her university SOAS, where she will be studying Anthropology and Arabic...

Her "hero's" story reached an online media site called Bristol 24-7, where she was praised for being so brave to visit the West Bank and give her (one-sided) story...

It seems from the "hero's" story she has given, it all took place in a regular demonstration in a village called Beit Ommar near Bethlehem...

Here is her story and my response to it which is still awaiting approval by the sites admin...

"Bombs, attack dogs and demonstrations – a brave Bristol student has shared her experiences of a dramatic gap year travelling in the Middle East.

Hari O’Brien has just returned two months in Palestine and Israel, where she has been touring the notorious West Bank.

'This village has lost land to the building of a settlement, Karmei Tsur in 1987 and further land to the building of the Wall in 2006,' she said. 'About 30 soldiers went crazy attacking about 50 of us demonstrators. They used sound bombs and tear gas as weapons throwing them at us at close rang, even when we were running away.'

'First I was hit on my back by a sound bomb thrown from about five metres away and another hit my friend’s head. Later a tear-gas canister was thrown at the back of my head at close range, very hard like a rock. I had to be treated by the Red Crescent.'

'The injuries are healing now but are very painful, especially my back.'

'I also visited a town called Sawiya. It’s surrounded by settlements in the Nablus region and 30% of their land and have attacked people and property including burning a school and stealing computers. During the last olive harvest, farmers were frequently attacked by settlers including with dogs.'

'The town is struggling economically with 20% of young men unemployed. In addition 67 housing units have demolition orders, which would displace 400 and 600 people.'" (source)

My Response

Sounds like YOU only went to a protest in “Palestine” and thats about all….

What do you expect from a protest, loves, hugs and kisses when faced with soldiers? This is not Disneyland my dear!

How about reporting on your experiences in the rest of “Palestine” and also how about visiting Israel and telling our side of the story too..

Yet another one sided propagandist who thinks she is doing the world and the Palestinians a favor by going to a protest and then reporting how “bad” Israeli soldiers are….pathetic as usual!

How about standing on Israels side when Hamas are firing rockets and mortars into Israel? See how much your story changes when you are faced with REAL danger and not “sound bombs” or tear gas, get real girl!!

You anti-Israel / pro-Palestinian activists are as ridiculous as they come – You go home telling your grand story of bravery, LOL, bravery? what was so brave about putting yourself into a protest against soldiers who are not firing rockets at you or even live fire from their weapons, its not brave, its plain stupid like the rest of the “peace activists” who go there…

The 60’s are over honey, time to catch up with the times – If you want to be “cool” and “hip” and “humanitarian” then how about giving some respect and decency to OUR people who face more than soldiers with tear gas everyday…

While I admire your attempt to actually get off your ass and come here, I loathe the fact that you didnt even bother coming to Israel and writing a “hero’s” story about our side… You may as well have stayed at home and just watched it all on the television as its the same propaganda one sided crap that you experienced and have now “told the world”…

You are NOT a hero and will only be a hero if you actually gave a real damn about everyone and not just yourself and your own interests…

I hope the amount of media attention you will get from this drives you to a point of insanity that you crack one day and it miraculously opens up your heart and mind a little more to realize that you are just another pawn for the medias little game of who is more evil… Hopefully it will help you see that WE too suffer from Hamas and we too actually care about the Palestinian people who are under the control of Hamas and wish they had a better life like we do…

If you actually took the time to speak to people here, enough people at least, then you would see that we are not what you make us out to be and we do actually care about their situation but we have ourselves to protect at the same time…

Mazaltov you are now a heroin and are popular, woohoo, great for you, but WE still have to live everyday with constant attacks on our civilians and constant attacks from the retarded media who only care about the $$$ they make from their and your “great” stories…

Thanks Hari O’Brien, your name will forever be in our hearts and minds as another one sided bleeding heart hypocrite in the world…

Turkish foreign minister has said that the international community still expected an apology from Israel over a deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid convoy.

'Apology is not only a demand that Turkey had voiced but also a demand by the international community. This issue is between Israel and the international community, of which Turkey is a part after all,' Ahmet Davutoglu on Tuesday told a live interview on a private Turkish television channel."

My Opinion

What exactly must Israel apologize for Mr FM?

For boarding the ship unprepared for terrorist attacks and then for having to defend themselves in a surprise attack on the commandos in which 9 terrorists were killed, not peace activists?

I think you, Mr FM, should apologize to Israel for allowing the boat to be sent in the first place!

There is no need for our apology... I would like to see a boat of these types of activists head towards Turkey or the USA and then see what happens when their soldiers are attacked and they respond in defense!

(BLOG) Why Does Obama Keep Apologizing?

"By Moshe Dann: President Obama's defense of the right of Muslims to build a mosque and Islamic center in New York City turned the issue into one of religious freedom. That was wrong.

Obama's first priority—like that of every national leader—is to speak for his country and on their behalf. Obama's refusal to do so, his insinuation that questions raised about a proposed Islamic mega-center near the site of the 9/11 attacks are un-American, unconstitutional, and prejudiced have shamed every American, and the good name of America.

Obama could have defended America; instead, he apologized for it.

He could have said that 4,400 Americans have died in Iraq, 1,200 have died in Afghanistan, and over a hundred thousand Americans have been wounded to help those Muslim countries attain freedom (and, of course, hundreds of billions of dollars towards that effort).

But he didn't.

Obama might have said that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the U.S.; hundreds of thousands of Muslims have found a home in America since and despite 9/11. He could have said America has and continues to stand for freedom and democracy.

But he didn’t.

He is probably the first American president to malign his own country while in office.

Obama could have explained that American law and values do not support discrimination, certainly not against Muslims; our history proves that.

There are about 2,000 mosques in the United States, serving about 8 million Muslims; New York City alone has a dozen mosques.

And Muslims are doing well in America: 67 percent have degrees; their average income is over $42,000; 26 percent earn over $100,000; 67 percent buy a new car every three years.

President Obama could have noted that most American Muslims don't attend prayer services; mosques are often political and social centers, some of which are problematic.

According to FBI estimates, 10 percent of the mosques in the United States are associated with radical jihadist ideology. Others estimate that 80 percent of mosques are dominated by the extremist Wahhabi ideology promoted by Saudi Arabia. And Wahhabists are allowed to practice their faith, under American principles of freedom of religion.

Unlike houses of worship in America which are built and supported by the local population, most mosques receive funding from foreign countries, especially Saudi Arabia. Stephen Schwartz in the National Review gives an example:

In a particularly disturbing case, the Islamic Development Bank also granted $295,000 to the Masjid Bilal Islamic Center, for the construction of the Bilal Islamic Primary and Secondary School in California, in 1999. Hassan Akbar, an American Muslim presently charged with a fatal attack on his fellow soldiers in Kuwait during the Iraq intervention, was affiliated with this institution.

In addition, the previously mentioned official website of the Saudi government reported a donation in 1995 of $4 million for the construction of a mosque complex in Los Angeles, named for Ibn Taymiyyah, a historic Islamic figure considered the forerunner of Wahhabism.

President Obama might have noted that the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization once linked to Nazi Germany that is banned in Egypt, is associated with some American mosques. One website notes:

A study by Freedom House concluded that 'American mosques are filled with Saudi publications that promote hate ideology. All of the books and publications were found to have some connection to Saudi Arabia. According to the study, these publications advanced a 'dualistic worldview in which there exist two antagonistic realms or abodes that can never be reconciled, Dar Al-Islam and Dar Al-Har, or Abode of War and that when Muslims are in the latter, they must behave as if on a mission behind enemy lines.'

The study also concluded that these publications 'pose a grave threat to non-Muslims and to the Muslim community itself.' The study further found that the 'spread of Islamic extremism, such as Wahhabism, is the most serious ideological challenge of our times' and that '[t]he Saudis' totalitarian doctrine of religious hatred now planted in many America mosques is inimical to our tolerant culture, and undermines the war on terrorism by providing the intellectual foundation for a new generation of Islamic extremists.'

President Obama could have explained that this is obviously not an issue of religious freedom. He could have championed America, its reputation, institutions and values. Instead, he reinforced the view that America is bigoted.

For that, President Obama owes every American an apology.

The author, a former assistant professor of history at CUNY, is a writer and journalist living in Jerusalem." (source)

(BLOG) The Truth About "The Occupation" And "The Settlements"

"By Ted Belman The pro-Palestinian propaganda machine has succeeded in stigmatizing the Israeli occupation and the settlements. Time and again we hear about the “brutal occupation” and the 'illegal settlements'. We rarely hear the truth in opposition to these lies. Occupation
Israel is accused of occupying the West Bank and Gaza. In fact these territories are described as 'The occupied Palestinian territories.' Not only are they not occupied in a legal sense, but also they are not 'Palestinian' lands in a sovereign sense..

The Fourth Geneva Convention (FGC) is a treaty between signatory states that are called High Contracting Parties (HCP). It regulates the obligations of one HCP who occupies the land of another HCP. It defines the terms 'Occupying Power' and 'Occupied State'. Thus this convention does not apply to the territories because they were not the land of any HCP. They have never been the land of an HCP. Prior to 1967, Jordon was in occupation of these territories, just as Israel is currently in occupation. Jordanian sovereignty over these lands was never recognized and ultimately Jordan relinquished any claims she claimed to have over these lands. The FGC was never applied when Jordan occupied the land and it shouldn’t be applied now that Israel does."

(VIDEO) HonestReporting: Tuvia Grossman Meets The Soldier Who Saved His Life

In 2000, the media published a photo of Tuvia Grossman, a Jewish student from Chicago -- bloodied and battered -- crouching beneath a club-wielding Israeli policeman. The caption identified him as a Palestinian victim of Israeli brutality -- with the clear implication that the Israeli soldier was the one who beat him. In fact, the policeman saved his life.

Now, ten years on, HonestReporting has reunited Tuvia and his rescuer for the first time since those terrible events. Watch the video to witness their dramatic reunion.

"On September 30, 2000, The New York Times, Associated Press and other major media outlets published a photo of a young man -- bloodied and battered -- crouching beneath a club-wielding Israeli policeman. The caption identified him as a Palestinian victim of the recent riots -- with the clear implication that the Israeli soldier was the one who beat him.

The victim's true identity was revealed when Dr. Aaron Grossman of Chicago sent the following letter to the Times:

Regarding your picture on page A5 of the Israeli soldier and the Palestinian on the Temple Mount -- that Palestinian is actually my son, Tuvia Grossman, a Jewish student from Chicago. He, and two of his friends, were pulled from their taxicab while traveling in Jerusalem, by a mob of Palestinian Arabs, and were severely beaten and stabbed.

That picture could not have been taken on the Temple Mount because there are no gas stations on the Temple Mount and certainly none with Hebrew lettering, like the one clearly seen behind the Israeli soldier attempting to protect my son from the mob.

In response, the New York Times published a half-hearted correction which identified Tuvia Grossman as 'an American student in Israel' -- not as a Jew who was beaten by Arabs. The 'correction' also noted that 'Mr. Grossman was wounded' in 'Jerusalem's Old City' -- although the beating actually occurred in the Arab neighborhood of Wadi al Joz, not in the Old City.

In response to public outrage at the original error and the inadequate correction, The New York Times reprinted Tuvia Grossman's picture -- this time with the proper caption -- along with a full article detailing his near-lynching at the hands of Palestinians rioters.

The photo of a bloodied Tuvia Grossman became a symbol in the struggle to ensure that Israel receives the fair media coverage that every nation deserves.

In April 2002, a District Court in Paris ordered the French daily newspaper 'Liberation' and the Associated Press to pay damages to Grossman to the amount of 4,500 Euro.

The Court condemned the Associated Press for 'mispresenting [Grossman] as a member of the Palestinian community,' while the court censured 'Liberation' for 'publishing the litigious picture with a comment edited the same faulty way, giving the picture a meaning and a scope it could not have.'

Arab Abuse

Even more remarkable is that Arab groups adopted Grossman's photo to use in their own propaganda campaigns, cynically using a bloodied Jew as a symbol of the Palestinian struggle.

An official Egyptian government website used the Grossman image on a photo gallery while the Palestinian Information Center, www.islam.net, incorporated Tuvia's photo onto its homepage banner, (The graphic was removed from the site, but is reprinted here:)

Additionally, some Arab groups called for a boycott of Coca-Cola, for doing business with Israel, and circulated a series of posters to state their case. One poster shows Grossman's bleeding face juxtaposed with the Coca-Cola logo, and the tag line: 'By supporting American products, you're supporting Israel.'

Snopes.com reported that, ironically, since Ramallah is home to a Coca-Cola bottling facility that employs about 400 local residents (and indirectly creates employment for hundreds more), and Coca-Cola industries throughout the Middle East are operated as local businesses, any boycott of Coca-Cola in Middle Eastern countries is likely to cause more monetary harm to Arabs and Palestinians than it is to Americans or Israelis.

Snopes.com noted another irony: Pepsi is also on the Arab boycott list, with claims that the name 'Pepsi' is an acronym for 'Pay Every Penny to Save Israel' or 'Pay Every Penny to the State of Israel.' As the Associated Press once noted, 'Calling Pepsi a 'Jewish product' is ironic, given that Pepsi was one of many multinationals that wouldn't do business in Israel during the 40-year Arab commercial boycott of the Jewish state.'

And of course the biggest irony of all is that the image chosen in the poster to represent Palestinian suffering was none other than Tuvia Grossman who nearly beaten to death by a Palestinian mob." (source)

(BLOG) Little Has Changed Since 2001

"I recently rediscovered the following, an Editorial in 'The Times', dated 15th March 2001, and I reproduce it below in its entirety. The quality of the writing and its honesty seem to me to have come from a bygone age of reportage, one in which intelligent journalists wrote without hyperbole or bias and in thought-provoking ways about issues which concerned us all.

Most saddening, as I reread it and reproduced it here, is the realisation that little has changed for the Palestinian people whose leadership still uses them and gets them killed to make political points, that indeed much has worsened, but that very few journalists have the moral courage any longer to tell us the truth about why that is. Nowadays Ashrawi’s 'crude forgery' below would not be questioned, but promulgated across the media and the internet as an honest account of what was 'really happening.' And Palestinian children, always vulnerable, are even more brutalised and deliberately brainwashed by Palestinian leaders:"

(ARTS) Turning Out Film Talent In Tel Aviv

"Award-winning Israeli directors, writers and producers say they owe their success to the film school that made them 'independent' and 'warrior-like.'

Israeli film has achieved a significant international presence in recent years. What's less well known is that many of the award-winning directors, writers and producers are graduates of Tel Aviv University's (TAU) Film and Television School.

Situated in a non-descript grey building on the university's Ramat Aviv campus, where cats lurk in the basement corridors and studios are packed with what at first glance appears to be mounds of junk, academics and former students of the film school appreciate their alma mater's encouragement of 'a free spirit' combined with 'discipline.'

There are a number of film schools in Israel including the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School in Jerusalem, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Sapir College in Ashkelon, and the Ma'ale School of Television and the Arts, which is the only religious film school in the country. Founded in 1972, however, TAU's film school is the oldest in the country, and the only one that is part of a university.

It has educated directors such as Ari Folman (Waltz with Bashir); Yaron Shani, who co-directed the recent Oscar-nominated Ajami; and Eytan Fox (Walk on Water, The Bubble). Over the past four years, films made by the school have won over 100 awards, received six student Academy Award nominations and been screened at film festivals worldwide. This is aside from the numerous prizes bestowed on its alumni.

Not just technique, it's about culture too

Reuven Hecker, who heads the film school and is also a writer, documentary filmmaker and graduate of the department, thinks that its success stems from the school's intensive combination of theory and practice. Moreover, he believes that filmmakers must be well educated and open-minded. The benefit of being part of a university, he tells ISRAEL21c, is that in addition to the theoretical classes on film, students can study other subjects that interest them.

His colleague, award-winning director, screenwriter and graduate of the school's first graduating class, Eitan Green, adds that 'the school is not just about technique, it's also about culture in all its aspects. Young people are exposed to the history of cinema as much as the history of art.'

Shani's decision to attend was influenced by the school's high level of academic studies. He says that one of its strengths is its comprehensive teaching of the theory and background of film. The school also taught him the importance of film criticism, which he describes as a crucial component of his development as a filmmaker. 'A filmmaker needs to understand the meaning of criticism, in order to know the meaning of a good film,' he says.

Shani tells ISRAEL21c that the city of Tel Aviv itself contributes to the school's ability to develop talent, since it's 'the most important cultural center in Israel. It attracts people who are ambitious, who want to succeed, so naturally TAU is the place to study.'

Learning to be warriors

Hagai Levi endorses the role that ambition plays. Levi created In Treatment, the award-winning Israeli TV drama series which was adapted in the US to critical acclaim, winning both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. One of the scriptwriters was Folman, his former classmate.

'We were in the real world from the minute we were at the school. We had to fight for everything and think for ourselves all the time. But it gave us the right attitude for the film world,' he says, 'making us independent and quite warrior-like.'

At the time, he continues, TV was not a realistic work option. There were no commercial or cable channels in Israel prior to 1990, so 'when we were studying we probably knew that either we would have to make feature films or do nothing. So in a way the school forced us to be ambitious and persistent.'

Levi, too, chose the school because of its connection to the university; the department is within the Katz Faculty of the Arts. 'It was important for me to receive a broad education, not just learn how to make films,' he recounts. While he says that some of the teachers were real intellectuals and not the most practical film teachers, '... we were given such perspective and I owe much to the school.'

Admission is competitive, with five or six applicants for every one of the 180 to 200 places, explains Prof. Hannah Naveh, dean of the Arts Faculty. Unlike other film schools, potential applicants do not submit a film; TAU selects its students according to their grades, so that those who are can't afford to produce their own films are not at a disadvantage.

Encouraging free spirit and discipline

Since most students enroll post-army and post-travel, they tend to be around 24 or 25 years old, says Hecker, so they bring with them some life experience. They are not forced into narrow specializations and have considerable creative freedom, but this 'comes with responsibility,' as they learn that the success or failure of a film rests entirely with them.

Hecker is absolutely clear about the role of his staff. Teachers are there to give students the tools to make their films, 'not ours.' This means that while teachers will happily provide advice and support, the students themselves must make all the final decisions. Green thinks that this encouragement of 'free spirit and discipline' is another one of the reasons for the school's success.

'I felt that I was thrown out to discover things for myself,' says Shani. He acknowledges that learning to be very independent and responsible for his work prepared him to create Ajami. 'The disadvantage that I felt became an advantage. As a filmmaker I was more prepared for the real game.'

While the awards keep on coming, the school is neither smug nor complacent about its successes or its influence. It still faces challenges. The issue and use of new media is one that Hecker wants to tackle, as this is 'the way the world is going.'

While much is uncertain about the future of film, it seems clear that many of Israel's film and TV award winners of the future will pass through this institution." (source)

(ENVIRO) Intel Israel Goes Green And Wins Gold

"Intel's facility in Haifa, Israel is blazing a green trail to connect business and environmental protection via high-performance, sustainable building practices.

Think of Israel and high tech, and the first word that pops into most minds is... Intel. Since setting up shop in the country in 1974, Intel Israel has been responsible for developing the Pentium and Centrino chips which power most PCs around the world.

But in the future, if you put together Intel and Israel, the first word that will probably spring to mind is... 'green.'

That's because recently in Haifa, Intel Israel dedicated the country's most environmentally-friendly office building. Dubbed IDC9, the 11-storey, $110 million facility has a double distinction. It is Israel's first LEED-certified green building and it has been awarded Gold - the second-highest rating in the LEED certification system.

Standing for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, the American LEED is a voluntary, consensus-based standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. The US Green Building Council initiated the LEED standard to encourage ecologically-sound construction in that country. There are barely a handful of LEED-certified buildings in Israel.

However, with the IDC9 Intel made a strategic decision to go full throttle in Israel after years of evaluating 'green' design standards and steadily incorporating green building concepts and practices into the construction of its buildings.

A slew of green elements

Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer praised the move at a gala dedication ceremony held at the site earlier this summer, which was also attended by Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan.

Ben-Eliezer stressed the 'natural and necessary connection between business and environmental protection,' that Intel Israel was displaying in its investment in the building, which also conforms to the Standards Institution of Israel standard 5281 for 'Outstanding Green Building,' which addresses four main areas: Energy, water savings, land, and various ecological issues.

The complex LEED system rates buildings according to their environmental properties, including water and energy consumption, interior conditions and more. It takes into account everything from construction materials, energy management and natural light to bike racks and showers.

The facility incorporates a slew of green elements, beginning at the construction level. Construction waste was separated at source into its component parts and recycled. About 13 percent of the construction materials came from recycled sources. The structure was constructed on a previous parking site to prevent damage to natural assets. These measures are expected to result in a reduction of 17% in total energy consumption.

In addition, an energy-saving technique has been used in the facility's server room. Spread over 7,535 square feet, the space will house up to 15,000 computers. The heat generated from these computers will be recycled for hot water and winter heating. The room uses energy-efficient lighting and is equipped with motion detectors that turn off the lights when it's not in use. The building's data center has also been designed to save energy. It features Intel Xeon processors, which reduce power consumption.

The building boasts wide and double glazed windows, patios and reflective shelves, which allow natural light to filter inside. More than 75% of its high-use areas are exposed to natural light with the help of automatic control systems that regulate the flow. Automatic sensors control the levels of artificial lighting according to the natural light, and employees can control lighting and temperatures in their offices via their personal computers. Fresh air is monitored by CO2 sensors that track the number of people on each floor.

The roof of the facility is covered with vegetation and heat-reflecting materials to lower interior temperatures. The roof garden provides enough thermal insulation to lower the heat load by 17 cooling tons. A special control system installed in the facility reduces water consumption for gardening needs by 55%, compared with average summer consumption. Water condensed by air conditioners is collected and used for gardening. The facility has also installed standard water-saving sanitary systems such as faucets, showers, toilets and urinals to achieve 30% reduction in water usage.

Economic benefits, minimal environmental impact

According to Intel's principle engineer, Ted Reichelt, it was a long process to convince everyone at the company to invest in the LEED certification, especially since in an environment where construction costs are increasing and every dollar is carefully scrutinized, spending money on 'certification' can easily plummet to the bottom of the construction priority list.

'Our construction managers started hearing more about other projects being LEED-certified, and this created greater internal acceptance of the idea; additionally, the costs associated with the LEED certification started to fall,' says Reichelt. Intel hopes that the experience with the Haifa building will lead to other office buildings being LEED-certified and eventually to Intel's first LEED certified fabrication plant.

'Intel is committed to incorporating environmental protection principles in the construction of its new facilities, as well as making strategic enhancements in existing facilities so that they meet the highest standards,' David Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager of Intel Architecture Group, said in a statement that continued, 'We seek to assign equal importance to economic, social and environmental goals. The IDC9 building in Haifa provides Intel with economic benefits with minimal environmental impact.'

According to Maxine Fassberg, vice president of Intel Corporation and general manager of Intel Israel, the company was working 'unrelentingly to find innovative solutions for reducing our environmental footprint. The building provides our employees with a safe, green and healthy environment, which saves energy and natural resources for the benefit of the building occupants and the environment,' Fassberg adds.

The city of Haifa is also enthralled with the new Intel facility, with Mayor Yona Yahav stating, 'Intel management's confidence in the city's ability to support the green building, positions Haifa as Intel's largest development center in the world. We are proud to have helped Intel Israel achieve this status.'

Apart from the Haifa development center, Intel Israel has centers in Yakum, Jerusalem and Petah Tikva, and two production plants (in Kiryat Gat and Jerusalem). Life has turned greener for the more than 6,000 workers, as well as several thousand additional external employees, who earn their living at Intel Israel."
